Our Cemetery

Cemetery

The earliest recorded burials in Coupland were 1891.  In 1910, St. Peter's Church purchased two acres of land from O.R. and Johanna Speckels for the establishment of a church cemetery.  In 1913, the heirs of R. Aschen donated their adjacent family burial plot to the church.  Additional parcels of land were conveyed by the Speckels family in 1932, 1944 and 1945.

St. Peter's Church Cemetery is eligible for designation as a State Historical Cemetery, and we are preparing the documentation to submit to the Texas Historical Commission.

The St. Peter's Cemetery Committee oversees the maintenance of the cemetery, sells plots and keeps records.  Maintenance costs are paid from interest earned on proceeds from the sale of cemetery plots.  Unfortunately, this small amount of income doesn't cover the mowing the grass.

This 97-year-old cemetery needs restoration and improvements, to honor the memory of our ancestors and loved ones.  Many of the older grave markers in the cemetery are leaning, due to our shifting black land soil, and the roads are difficult to drive on after it rains.  That phase of work will focus on leveling and stabilizing the grave markers, grading and putting gravel on the roads.

The flagpole at the cemetery entrance was donated by the St. Peter's Brotherhood, in honor of the veterans of all wars.  Plans call for lighting the flagpole and the cemetery sign and possibly even fencing the cemetery.

How You Can Help

We need your help to preserve and improve the St. peter's Church Cemetery, to honor those who came before us and to serve future generations.

Please support the cemetery by donating funds to help cover the cost of maintenance and improvements.  Checks should be made payable to St. Peter's church and indicate that the check is for cemetery preservation.  Donations to the church are tax-deductible as charitable contributions.

Cemetery Plots

Burial plots are available for purchase at $300 for members of St. Peter's Church and $1500 for non-members.  Purchasing your cemetery plot now relieves your family of handling this task later during a stressful time and provides funds to generate interest income to maintain the cemetery.

To purchase a plot, contact the Church office (512) 856-2433 for information concerning burials at the cemetery.
